What sport do you compete in: Modern Pentathlon

Explain what a Pentathlete does to train: Year round training and competing in Running, Swimming, Fencing, Equestrian and Shooting. Needless to say this sport takes a lot of dedication, vigilance and many hours of training. It's a full time job in itself. Constantly pushing your body to the limit through all the seasons and anything mother nature throws at you.

Why did you start training and competing in Pentathlons: I first started with horse back riding at age 5 and was introduced to the sport at the age of 10. I was an extremely hyperactive child. Always running around and getting myself into things.To my parents I displayed the early signs of a Pent-up-Athlete. I enjoyed the many different aspects of the sport and soon found out one of my strengths is versatility.

Competition Career:

* OMPA Provincial Championships Guelph, ON 2007
* Pentathlon Winter Nationals, Toronto 2007
* OMPA Provincials, Guelph/Milton 2006
* Canadian National Championships and Masters Invitational 2005, Guelph, ON
* OMPA Championships 2005 Guelph, ON
* OMPA Provincial Championships 1993-1997
* National Pentathlon Championships Red Deer, Alberta 1997

Best experience: My best experience would probably be winning the Senior Women's Provincial Championship title in 2004. Although winning is not everything and with every loss you learn regardless. I go out there to achieve personal bests. I really enjoy the comraderie aspect of the sport. Some of my best experiences have been training, comepting, and travelling with good people and great friends.

Worst experience: National Pentathlon Championships in Alberta. The riding aspect of the sport is very tricky. You draw a horse and then have roughly fifteen minutes to make nice with an animal that weighs anywhere from 1000-1200 lbs. Then you are expected to jump a clean and fast stadium course. Every horse is a different ride. They possess their own mind and ultimately can do whatever they please. I fell off during my ride. The horse stepped on my thigh trying to maneuver around me. Very painful and after that I was dreading the run. I still ran and finished the competition. I carried a bruise in the shape of half a horse shoe. I will never blame the horse. It was a silly fall. It happened and I had to accept it. In this sport you have to roll with whatever the day brings you and continue on to the next events.

Inspiration: My biggest inspiration is my father. He competes as a Master. When I tell this to people they automatically assume he was the one who got me hooked. I snicker and say 'Believe it or not it is the other way around'. He started because, he had to wait around and watch me compete. He wanted to be able to get in on the competition. He goes out and does the best he can and accomplishes many Personal Best's. He's also always analyzing his game and figuring out what he needs to work on for the next competition.

Interests outside of sports: I'm a makeup artist so anything to do with painting, art and making every person feel beautiful. Creating art and going to galleries. All types of music genres especially live music. Artsy Films, Improv comedy and spoken word poetry. Sight seeing and people watching. Writing and reading. Catching up with friends and reminiscing about old times.

Goals: One of my goals for this year is to improve on my shooting score. This aspect of the sport is very technical. Focus is a key element. If you breathe even in the slightest wrong way it can effect the outcome of the shot. This discipline is probably my weakest. Riding is my strongest. The other aspects fall in between. I need to keep myself strong and well rounded. I do this by cross training and utilizing strength in all muscle groups. I would like to get a chance to compete internationally. As well, I would like to really give my sport the exposure it truly deserves.
